City of Indianapolis Once Again Earns Global Recognition for Environmental Leadership, Transparency

In 2025, only 30 US cities scored by CDP were named to the ‘A’ List

IINDIANAPOLIS—The City of Indianapolis has been recognized by global environmental nonprofit CDP for its leadership in environmental transparency, climate action, and resilience planning, securing a place on CDP’s respected annual ‘A’ List. This is the eighth time it has received an ‘A’ rating.

CDP operates the world’s only independent environmental disclosure system, with over 1,000 cities, states, and regions reporting environmental data through CDP in 2025. Only 120 cities worldwide earned CDP’s top status, including 30 US cities. Indianapolis has disclosed environmental impact data through CDP since 2015.

Earning a spot on CDP’s 2025 Cities A List reflects the highest standard of local climate leadership. To be recognized with an A, a city must meet a series of robust leadership criteria. This includes publicly disclosing environmental data through the CDP-ICLEI Track platform, maintaining a comprehensive city-wide emissions inventory, and publishing a credible climate action plan. Cities must also complete a full climate risk and vulnerability assessment and set a clear climate adaptation goal that outlines how they will address current and future climate hazards.

“This is the eighth time that Indy has been recognized as one of CDP’s A List cities. It’s clear that Indianapolis values accountability and transparency when it comes to our environmental data,” said Mo McReynolds, Director of the Indianapolis Office of Sustainability. “As we engage more building owners and managers in our Thriving Buildings program, and as we work towards the public launch of our emissions data, receiving another A score from CDP is a sign that we’re still heading in the right direction.”

A List cities in the US are demonstrating that local leadership drives climate innovation, infrastructure investment, and economic opportunity. Transparent disclosure through CDP-ICLEI Track provides a platform for cities to track progress, engage communities, and unlock increased access to funding to accelerate solutions and strengthen long-term community resilience.

“Cities play a decisive role in shaping a resilient and earth-positive future,” said Sherry Madera, CEO of CDP. “When local governments commit to transparent disclosure, robust climate planning and clear adaptation strategies, they not only protect their communities but also unlock opportunities for innovation and sustainable growth. Their leadership shows how data-driven climate action can strengthen both people and the planet.”
