The City of Indianapolis and IFF announced the 12 organizations selected to participate in the second cohort of Thriving Nonprofits. The local initiative is designed to help Marion County nonprofits increase energy efficiency in their facilities, reduce operating costs, and cultivate the environmental resilience needed to ensure their long-term success as community anchors.

This is the first Knozone Action Day declared in 2026.

The City of Indianapolis has been selected to join the 2026 LEED for Cities Cohort, an initiative of the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC). The cohort is part of USGBC’s Local Government Leadership Program, which supports cities in improving sustainability, resilience, and quality of life for residents. LEED for Cities provides local governments with a comprehensive framework for tracking sustainability efforts’ impact on people, the environment, and economy.

The City of Indianapolis and IFF announced the application launch for the 2026 Thriving Nonprofits cohort. This program is designed to help Marion County nonprofits improve the energy efficiency of their facilities and reduce operating costs. Funded by the McKinney Family Foundation and The Indianapolis Foundation, the 2026 cohort will provide energy assessments and matching grants of up to $10,000 to as many as 15 mission-driven organizations.

Through the Thriving Nonprofits initiative, cohort members received free energy assessments of their facilities and matching grants to complete building upgrades designed to reduce each organization’s operating costs.

In 2025, only 30 US cities scored by CDP were named to the ‘A’ List

Today, the City of Indianapolis's Office of Sustainability announced how it distributed $2.5 million in federal funding to support energy efficiency in Indianapolis. $500,000 was directed toward Indianapolis Neighborhood Housing Partnership (INHP) to upgrade roughly 39 failing HVAC units to energy efficient models in an affordable senior housing building, William Penn Commons. The Office also distributed $2 million to capitalize lending operations at the Indiana Energy Independence Fund (IEIF), the state's nonprofit green bank helping Hoosiers lower energy costs in their homes and buildings.

The City of Indianapolis has been named to the 2024 CDP A List , the top status available from the largest global independent environmental disclosure system. This rating recognizes global leadership in environmental transparency, climate action, and resilience planning. Only 112 cities worldwide earned CDP's top status, including 29 U.S. cities, the most from any country. Indianapolis has disclosed environmental impact data through CDP since 2015; this is the seventh time it has received an A rating.

Today, the Indianapolis Office of Sustainability and IFF announced the inaugural cohort of Thriving Nonprofits, a new initiative funded by the McKinney Family Foundation designed to help Marion County nonprofits improve the energy efficiency of their facilities and reduce operating costs. The Office of Sustainability and IFF selected ten organizations to participate in the initiative. Each will receive a free energy assessment of their facility and matching grants of up to $10,000 to facilitate building upgrades that reduce energy usage and monthly utility bills.
