The Indianapolis Office of Sustainability and the Indianapolis Department of Public Works - Environmental Resources Management team will host an electronics recycling event on Earth Day, Saturday, April 22 at Riverside Park (2420 Riverside Drive). Similar events in recent years have drawn hundreds of attendees and diverted thousands of pounds of electronic material from the landfill.

Today the City of Indianapolis announced the release of the Request for Qualifications (RFQ) for professional services regarding solid waste service procurement and transition. This RFQ calls for qualified firms or teams to assist the Department of Public Works (Indy DPW) in procuring contracts for all solid waste and recycling services.

Indianapolis building owners and facilities managers of structures 100,000 square feet or larger have the opportunity this spring to attend free, guided workshops where they can learn how to begin tracking their utility data in the free ENERGYSTAR Portfolio Manager software program. The three in-person workshops, referred to as "Data Jams" are hosted by the City's Office of Sustainability with technical support provided by the American Institute of Architects Indiana.

The 30,000 trees included in this tally have been planted within Marion County public right-of-way since the benchmark in 2018 and include trees planted by the Department of Public Works' Urban Forestry, Land Stewardship, and Engineering programs, the Department of Parks and Recreation, as well as those planted via the City's partnership with KIB, IUPUI, Downtown Indy, trees planted via Citizen Energy Group's 10,000 Trees Initiative with KIB, and AES Indiana's Trees For Indy program.

The City of Indianapolis and Health by Design will receive $50,000 in Accelerated Mobility Playbook (AMP) technical assistance from City Thread. This assistance includes a community-specific mobility audit of the city’s current state of practice and an action plan for improved implementation and partnership.  

There is no formal presentation at the Open House. Experts will help residents understand flood risk and flood insurance. They can also explain floodplain development regulations and the mapping process. Residents can meet with experts one-on-one to look at their own addresses on the new maps. They will learn about their specific risk. They will also learn how to help prevent flood loss.

Trees should be dropped off only at the specially designated area within the park, and only between dawn and dusk. Please check the list carefully as the selected parks locations vary from year-to-year and the site you brought your tree to last year may no longer be a site. Dropping off trees at locations not listed below is considered illegal dumping and is punishable by fines of up to $3,000. 

Indianapolis has been recognized by CDP as one of 122 cities and counties across the globe taking bold leadership on environmental action and transparency, despite the pressures of a challenging global situation. Indianapolis has disclosed environmental impact data through CDP since 2015; this is the fifth time it has received an A rating. Designed to encourage and support local governments to ramp up their climate action and ambition, CDP's Cities A List is based on environmental data disclosed by local governments to CDP-ICLEI Track.

On Monday, November 7, Councillor John Barth (District 7) will introduce a Special Resolution during the Council meeting to support the development of a carbon credit program to protect and generate revenue for the maintenance of urban forests and trees throughout Indianapolis. The Special Resolution follows up on a series of hearings held by the Council’s Environmental Sustainability Committee, chaired by Barth, focused on green space, urban forests, and new methods to fund green initiatives, including consideration for a city-operated carbon credit program.

This free, family-friendly event will feature a live DJ, food trucks, and free coffee for the first 200 attendees, all while showcasing the various makes and models of electric vehicles available in the Central Indiana market. This is a great way for folks to explore their options, whether they are interested in purchasing an EV soon or just curious to get some questions answered.

The Indianapolis Office of Sustainability and local nonprofit RecycleForce will host an electronics recycling (“E-cycle”) event for Marion County community members on Saturday, September 24 at Perry Park (451 E Stop 11 Road) from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Properly disposing of electronics is important because Indiana's Electronic Waste Law prohibits households, small businesses, and schools from disposing of electronic waste in the trash.

Indianapolis is one of 12 U.S. cities that will study the cooling potential of urban natural areas. Led by NYC-based nonprofit Natural Areas Conservancy, the study results will help cities prepare for climate change.

The B20 Club of Indiana, a collaboration between the Indiana Soybean Alliance (ISA) and the American Lung Association that recognizes and supports select Indiana-based fleets running on biodiesel blends of 20 percent or higher, recently welcomed the City of Indianapolis Department of Public Works (DPW) as its newest member.

After launching benchmarking and transparency program Thriving Buildings in March of this year, the City's Office of Sustainability set a goal of recruiting 50 different properties around Indianapolis to begin voluntarily tracking their energy and water usage; just four months later, a total of 187 buildings are enrolled, including many city-owned buildings, for a total square footage greater than 30 million square feet.

This plan, which is submitted to the Indiana Utilities Regulatory Commission every three years, represents a critical opportunity for AES Indiana and the City to further coordinate to ensure Indianapolis and its residents have equitable access to clean, affordable, and reliable energy.
